Hardware News

PowerUSB’s power strips are designed to help users better control the energy consumption of their PCs and peripherals, and they come in four models:

- Standard Basic

- Computer Watchdog

- Smart LCD standalone strip

- Digital IO PLC Controller.

The Computer Watchdog model ($89) offers all of the features of the basic model, plus the ability to detect a hung computer by heartbeat and power-cycle it via a graceful scheduled shutdown cycle, so it is probably the most useful model for IT Departments. If the system hangs and the heartbeat becomes unresponsive, the Watchdog will hard cycle the PC's outlet. You can even select how long the power is disabled to the outlet, allowing the PC to “rest” before restarting. Your system must support “automatic start on power failure” and be enabled in BIOS.

Software Updates

NetWrix announced its new User Activity Video Reporter tool that acts like a surveillance camera for critical servers and other IT systems by recording user activity for security, compliance, audit and troubleshooting. Their VideoScape technology allows IT administrators to fast-forward or link directly to specific tasks or actions, e.g., accessing or changing files, web browsing or work done in management tools and applications. The NetWrix User Activity Video Reporter can be used as a standalone product or as part of the NetWrix Change Reporter Suite.

Double-Take Availability for Windows provides fault tolerance and enables immediate recovery from system outages. The software monitors changes to all protected files and replicates only the bytes that change. You can choose between application-level or full-server failover to configure an alternate system to take over for the production server in the event of an outage. Double-Take Availability protects Exchange, SQL Server, SharePoint and more.

ATMs/Kiosks

Security features for banknotes fall into two categories: those that can be verified by the public — retailers, banks, cash-in-transit companies and average citizens; and those that can be verified only by a central bank using special technology. While ATMs use fairly sophisticated anti-counterfeiting technology, a German company says that they can offer the general public an alternative to watermarks and security threads. Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) is the company in charge of producing a number of the world's currencies, and has introduced MAGnite which is basically a thin and durable microcapsule that contains enclosed and protected dyes which react to magnetic force. They claim that their new security feature for banknotes allows them to be verified with a simple, garden-variety magnet, such as that in a smartphone speaker or a handbag clasp. The MAGnite process employs special ink pigments that align when the note is held over a magnet, making the security feature visible.

Wireless World

A firm called Crosscliq has developed an NFC (near field communications) solution that they say "offers advertisers for the first time in history, the means to connect the offline print world with the online digital world." Their BlackBerry magazine ad includes an NFC tag which when tapped with an enabled handset, delivers a holiday gift offer to the user. From there customers scroll across three online offers that include free premium BlackBerry apps, information on the new BB10 line-up including options for updates and articles, and the option to download the CIBC Sure Tap app, which lets users make contactless payments.

Palo Alto Networks recently introduced the VM-Series, a new next-generation firewall in a virtual form factor which is designed to protect virtual and cloud environments. They say that their solution:

• safely enables intra-host virtual machine traffic

• tracks security policies to virtual machine movement

• automates and easily orchestrates security policies

The Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) was formed to promote the use of best practices for providing security assurance within cloud computing, as well as to provide education on the uses of cloud computing to help secure all other forms of computing. The research arm within the CSA has spent several years developing guidance on all areas of security-as-a-service. Recently the CSA released the SIEM guideline as part of its overall Security-as-a-Service Implementation Guidance. A 33-page section of the guide provides best practices on how to evaluate, architect and deploy cloud-based SIEM services to both enterprise and cloud-based networks, infrastructure and applications.

ACH Alert, a vendor of anti-fraud technology to banks, said its ALERT and C.O.P.S. services prevented more than $100 million in attempted fraudulent automated clearing house and wire-transfer transactions in 2012. ACH ALERT's patented technology allows subscribing account holders to control the pay/no pay decision for incoming ACH debits, while C.O.P.S. (Credit Origination Positive-Pay Services) is designed to prevent losses that result from account takeover. C.O.P.S. transaction level validation occurs after transactions are received by the bank and before they are released to the respective payment networks.

According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), small issuers of debit cards have been largely unaffected by the Dodd-Frank legislation. Their report concludes that there has been no adverse effect on institutions under $10B in assets that are exempt from interchange limits. However, some critics disagree and cite an earlier GAO study that noted smaller institutions had seen a 5% decrease in interchange revenue during the first three months of the law’s implementation.

Internet Access

A new study by tech blog DigitalOlympus.com shows that utilizing VoIP phones (VoIP networks) and investing in unified communications (UC) services can dramatically save costs for organizations of all sizes. Unified communications blends voice, data, SMS, IM, video and other platforms together on the same network to save costs and boost efficiency, while VoIP provides the backbone to support your UC infrastructure, says a study collaborator.

Ringio, a cloud-based contact center provider, recently released Ringio Call Center, which they say is an affordable and simple cloud-based contact center meant for smaller organizations. The solution offers a number of features, including a virtual PBX, smart call queuing, mobility support, rich call screening, a desktop client, and a REST API that allows companies and third parties to extend the call center’s functionality, in addition to the built-in CRM functionality. Its built-in CRM functions keep contacts in sync with Google Contacts, Salesforce, Highrise or other CRM systems.
