Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) has added a new banknote
processing machine to its range of desktop systems: the BPS C1. This
two-stacker machine, featuring a sorting tray and a reject
compartment, boasts a counting speed of up to 1,500 banknotes per
minute, which G&D claims is the fastest in its category. The system
is able to process up to 10 different currencies, and two people can
use the same BPS C1 machine in parallel. As a further option,
banknotes can be sorted into three classes according to the
condition they are in, distinguishing between banknotes suitable for
ATMs, banknotes fit for circulation, and banknotes no longer fit for
circulation.
As part of their “virtualization made easy” push, Dell announced

up to 200 VMs (using Microsoft or VMware technologies). The vStart
line also includes pre-configured packages targeted at supporting 50
and 100 VMs. The vStart products show up at your bank preconfigured
to your specifications and ready to run. The installation support
includes a Dell field service engineer to assist in the
installation. The system is self-contained in a rack mount that
hosts the Dell servers, Dell EqualLogic storage, UPS, and

Software Updates
There are numerous Microsoft Office alternatives such as OpenOffice,
LibreOffice, Lotus Symphony, and Google Docs. Another option is called
Kingsoft Office Suite Free 2012. The free version is fairly robust, offering
counterparts to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint - and file compatibility with
all three. It doesn't support Visual Basic or macros, however, so power
users may want to consider the $69.95 Pro version, which adds those features
(among others).
Microsoft's new version of System Center 2012 revamps the product, with the
goal of making it easier to use and more powerful, The software giant's goal
is to entice organizations looking for a unified way to manage their virtual
and cloud environments. The package permits admins to look at different
virtualization infrastructures — whether it be from Microsoft or VMware or
from Xen Server — in one consistent view through System Center 2012. By some
accounts, System Center can be deployed at one-fourth to one-fifth the cost
of a product like VMware.

ATMs/Kiosks
It is impossible to determine the number of ATMs
in America that have achieved compliance with the new ADA standards,
which become law March 15. Decisions on whether to replace or
upgrade must be made quickly or ATM deployers face the risk of
lawsuits. Another option is to outsource to reliable vendors that
offer an integrated service plan that permits the bank to lease the
new machines and components needed for ADA compliance. The ATMs
belong to the outsourcer and they are required to do the upgrades
and the bank no longer incurs the costs.
According to the FBI, more money is stolen by criminals who
compromise ATM systems and perpetrate other types of data breaches
than by thieves who rob branches. By some estimates, robbing a
typical ATM can net thieves 10 times as much cash as a branch
robbery. In an effort to thwart these losses, Brazil-based Itautec
SA is working on a prototype ATM that uses holograph images to allow
ATM users to make transactions using hand gestures. The machine can
then be placed in a secure enclosure with only the cash dispenser
door exposed.

FIS announced a new mobile payments solution that allows consumers
to use most smartphones to make purchases at the point-of-sale (POS)
and for online shopping. This cloud-based payment solution requires
downloadable applications for both consumers and retailers. FIS says
that their mobile payments solution can be built into the banks'
existing mobile applications which helps to preserve brand equity.
Consumers attach their payment card information to the app, and then
use it to make a purchase. The FIS Mobile Wallet is secure since no
payment credentials (e.g., card numbers or PINs) are provided to the
POS device, or are stored on the smartphone.
The Online Banking Report awarded their first 2012 Best of the Web

• reward-checking status: users can see how their rewards tally up
in the three-level program.

According to a new report from Javelin Strategy & Research, consumers
are confused about their payment options as a result of recent debit
card regulations. Seventy percent of consumers actually believe that
the debit card regulations will work to the advantage of financial
institutions, while the remaining 30 percent think merchants will
benefit. Javelin's data shows that if FIs implemented debit card
fees, 32 percent of consumers would choose cash as their payment
option, 25 percent would pay with a credit card, and 26 percent
would switch to another FI that didn’t charge for debit cards. The
Javelin study also found that 90 percent of consumers said they
would require a discount of at least 3 percent to switch to another
payment option.
We reported on ZestCash, which was founded by the former CIO of
Google and the former chief customer officer of Capital One, back in
July 2011 and by now the online payday loan company has loaned
millions of dollars to thousands of customers. With ZestCash,
borrowers pick how much money they want to borrow and for how long.
As they pick their loan terms, the company clearly displays their
weekly payment, allowing users to adjust the terms to arrive at a
payment that is manageable for them. The company allows users to
borrow between $300 and $800 and pay back the loan between three and
eight months. The fast growing company is convinced that their
machine learning-based underwriting techniques that they have
developed "will completely change the way lenders view and use
data."
