Dell has unveiled a new disk-based backup
appliance that can perform data deduplication and replication tasks.
The DR4000, Dell's first deduplication appliance, uses inline
deduplication and compression features to reduce data during backups
of both physical and virtual servers. The DR4000 comes in 2.7TB,
5.4TB and 9TB models and can achieve up to a 15:1 data reduction
ratio, allowing the boxes to store up to 100TB in a 2U (3.5-in high)
array.
The price for SSDs (solid state drives) that are going into PCs are
expected to fall below $1 per gigabyte during the second half of
2012, further boosting adoption, according to market research
company IDC. In 2011, the price per gigabyte was about $1.56 and
2011 was already a record year, with revenue more than doubling year

ATMs/Kiosks
Diebold's 4G LTE-enabled ATM – the first ATM
concept in the world to utilize 4G technology – was just
demonstrated during the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show
(CES). In collaboration with Verizon, Diebold integrated 4G LTE
technology to create a new, additional channel for communication to
and from the ATM. With the addition of the 4G LTE channel, the ATM
also has the potential to communicate directly with third parties,
such as service providers or monitoring centers.
Visa and Better ATM Services announced the ability to dispense Visa
Gift cards in addition to cash at existing ATMs. An in-market pilot
program is currently underway offering Visa Gift cards at walk-up
and drive-through ATMs in select locations throughout Arizona. Under
the pilot program, ATM menu screens now include a "Purchase Visa
Gift Card" option and prompt to designate the value to load on each
card. Cards are available with no activation fee in $25
denominations during the pilot. The new ATM-dispensed Visa Gift card
is made of a durable yet thinner material, which allows cards to
easily pass through the cash mechanisms of ATMs.

Kaspersky Lab released a free smartphone security application to
keep your contacts, email and banking information from falling into
the wrong hands. Available through the Android Market, Kaspersky
Mobile Security Lite lets you block sources of unwanted calls and
text messages, and offers a basic level of protection for your
Android-based smartphone. By sending a text message to your missing

your phone’s memory.
At last week's Consumer Electronics Show, next-generation radio
chips were on display that deliver Wi-Fi connections that measure
their data rates in gigabits per second. The next-generation Wi-Fi
comes in two different frequencies: 5GHz, for what will eventually
be the IEEE 802.11ac standard, and 60GHz, for what will eventually
be 802.11ad. The former can reach data rates of 1.3 gigabits per
second, the latter, up to 7Gbps.
Sprint Nextel has tripled the number of smartphones it offers with
near-field communication (NFC), as the carrier and its rivals work
to convince consumers to make mobile payments mainstream. Sprint is
among those betting big on the idea that people will want to use
their smartphones as credit cards. Sprint and others at the recent
Consumer Electronics Show were touting NFC's side benefits, which

Dome9 Security offers automated management of firewall settings on
servers in physical and virtual environments with the aim of keeping
servers locked down with less manual configuration. Dome9's service
seeks to automate some of that security by setting and enforcing
policies on firewalls that are native to virtual or physical server
operating systems. The company says the service can lock down
firewall ports, allowing access only to specified users during
specified time windows but closing them at all other times.
Administrative ports, for example, can be shut down by default and
enabled per server on demand for a specific period of time and for a
particular administrator or group. The service also enables creating
different privilege sets for different administrators or groups.
Centrify Corporation offers their Centrify Suite 2012 which
centralizes privilege access management as well as audits user
session activity for increased security and compliance of cloud and
on-premise systems. The suite includes DirectControl 5.0,
DirectAuthorize 2.0, DirectManage 5.0, DirectAudit 2.0 and
DirectSecure 1.2 which work together to enable secure
authentication, single sign-on, privileged access management and
user session auditing. The software employs Hierarchical Zones and
Computer Roles to help make it easier to consolidate complex UNIX
and Linux identity environments into Active Directory, and logically
manage relationships between users, groups and computer roles in a
cross-platform system environment.

The Houston-based firm acknowledges that cash-back rewards are the
most expensive or among the most expensive kinds of rewards that
card issuers can offer, but argues that they are worth the
additional expense given the better value proposition they offer.
