Hardware News

Symantec unveiled the Backup Exec 3600 and NetBackup 5220 enterprise backup appliances to help organizations modernize their backup infrastructures and accelerate backup windows. Based on NetBackup 7.1, the appliance includes Symantec’s content-aware deduplication which the company claims can reduce backup volume and network utilization by as much as 99 percent, eliminating backup window problems and enabling replication of data to other sites for business continuity.

Tintri announced its second-generation Tintri VMstore appliance, which now provides visibility into virtual machine performance bottlenecks and corrects misalignment problems between the guest file system and storage infrastructure. The appliance's software allows IT administrators to view virtual machine or vDisk latency and identify where performance issues are taking place. The firm says that VM administrators now have deeper visibility into performance statistics and that admins will appreciate their new auto-alignment feature for VMs.

Software Updates

Keeping pace with its rival Citrix in the VDI (virtual desktop interface) market, VMware has updated its desktop virtualization software so that users can now personalize their desktops and stream them over WANs (wide area networks). With user personalization in View 5.0, administrators can embed departmental applications and configure custom settings for the virtual desktops, without the desktops taking up more space in storage. With this release VMware was also able to reduce the amount of bandwidth needed for streaming a VDI by as much as 75 percent, making VDI over a WAN possible.

Secunia, a Danish security company that makes two tools that ensure applications have up-to-date patches, released a product that can deploy non-Microsoft patches using Microsoft's patching systems. Secunia's Corporate Software Inspector (CSI) 5.0 can now package third-party patches - such as those from Adobe Apple and other vendors - and publish those updates to Microsoft's Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) and Microsoft's System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM).

ATMs/Kiosks

Diebold announced its new Opteva Flex Performance Series with the introduction of the 828 lobby ATM and 868 through-the-wall ATM. The Flex Performance Series offers several self-service functionalities, including cash and check deposit acceptance, cash dispensing and full recycling. The machines have a higher cash storage capacity and provide note-handling, including validation of both in and outgoing notes, counterfeit note detection and note-fitness checking, cash sorting and denominating. The recycling-ready deposit automation module can be configured in deposit-only, cash-in and cash-out or full-recycling modes.

Wireless World


Fiserv has introduced the new Mobiliti mobile banking, alerting and payments suite. Mobiliti unites the functionality of Mobile Money from Fiserv and BankAnywhere from the recently acquired M-Com within a single product suite, and will replace both of those product brands. Mobiliti supports all three major mobile access modes: SMS (text messaging), mobile browser and downloadable applications for Android, iPhone and Blackberry. The suite includes Mobiliti Enterprise, Mobiliti Advantage and Mobiliti Edge.

AVG announced the availability of AVG Internet Security 2012, the latest edition of its Internet security software. In addition to AVG's multi-layered protection, utilizing signature-based antivirus, heuristics and behavior-based threats detection, AVG 2012 comes with the all-new AVG Accelerator and AVG Advisor features, as well as additional protection technologies such as integrated security firewall and AVG LinkScanner that provides users peace of mind when browsing, shopping and banking online.

Trend Micro announced the latest release of the company's web gateway solution, which now delivers visibility and control over the growing use of cloud-based applications such as instant messaging, peer-to-peer, video and audio applications, and web mail. The company says that InterScan Web Security 5.5 provides superior protection against Internet threats, while reducing costs through datacenter consolidation by supporting bare-metal, VMware Ready and Microsoft Hyper-V virtual appliances. It works alongside the Advanced Reporting and Management module, a separate component that provides centralized real-time network traffic visibility, drill-down historical reporting, and policy management.

Technology and Marketing

A new report from Aite Group that examined the demand for and profitability of free and high-yield checking accounts found that between 2009 and 2011 that high-yield checking accounts grew more rapidly and generated greater revenue for financial institutions during the recession than did free checking accounts. The research firm is convinced that high-yield checking accounts have a bright future because when compared with free checking accounts, high-yield checking accounts are more effective at acquiring accounts, generating deposits, producing interchange revenue, and delivering profits.

Online Banking/E-Commerce/Website Design


Banks may actually be saving more in customer service costs than on postage from the switchover to e-billing, according to a study by Fiserv. Consumers receiving electronic bills from their bank were 64 percent less likely to call a live service representative each month than those receiving paper bills. Consumers receiving e-bills from a bank made 1.57 self-service visits, compared to 1.37 visits for those getting bills directly from the website of Consolidated Edison, which participated in the study.

Internet Access

Silver Peak has introduced free, downloadable low-end WAN acceleration software that can turn two x86 servers into data replication devices. Silver Peak's free WAN software, dubbed VX-Xpress, is based on the Virtual Acceleration Open Architecture (VXOA) platform the company announced last month. VX-Xpress is an entry-level product aimed at organizations just starting WAN optimization, or at small branch or remote offices of larger organizations, and supports 4Mbps of WAN bandwidth with 8,000 simultaneous sessions.

VMware and Mitel unveiled technology that will enable voice communications through a virtualized desktop. Mitel will begin offering its Unified Communicator (UC) Advanced client software as an integrated application to run on VMware's View 5 desktop virtualization environment. This integration will enable mobile devices, soft phones and collaboration applications to run on a virtual desktop. An IDC analyst said the news marks "a significant step forward in the evolution of desktop virtualization."
