Hardware News
Intel announced the new 710 series solid state
drives (SSD), which the company says are a replacement for hard
drives in enterprise servers. The drives are MLC (multilevel cell)
SSDs, which store bits of data at multiple levels in each cell, but
provide the endurance of typical single-level cell (SLC) SSDs, where
a bit of data is stored per cell. SLCs are considered faster and
more reliable than MLCs in terms of endurance cycles. Additionally,
the Intel SSD 710 includes a technology called HET (high endurance
technology), which combines firmware enhancements, management
features and algorithms to reduce data errors.
Meanwhile, Micron just released its first entry level SSD aimed at
being used as a boot drive in servers or for I/O intensive read
applications. The P400e comes with a 6Gbps serial ATA (SATA)
interface. It comes in capacities of 50GB, 100GB, 200GB and 400GB
and has a maximum sequential read/write rate of 350MBps and 140MBps,
respectively. The company said that they chose the slimmest possible
form factor for the SSD to meet the demand of pizza box-style blade
server environments.

branch image capture by the end of 2011. Celent recommends that banks
considering a teller capture initiative should:
1) Remove back counter capture equipment.
2) Refresh the teller system if needed.
3) Invest in fast bulk feed scanners.

ATMs/Kiosks
ATEN announced their new KN1000 KVM Over the NET
solution which offers remote kiosk management and support. The unit
is an all-in-one, hardware-based control unit that provides KVM over
IP, remote power and serial console management as well as virtual
media functionality. The KN1000's built-in power outlet provides
remote power management (on, off and rebooting). Users can also
configure network switches and other serial control devices through
the KN1000's serial console functionality.
With increasing sophistication, criminals are able to mimic the
appearance of ATM fascias, card readers and other aspects that fool
all but the most observant users. Now they have new tool in their
arsenal: 3D printers that take two dimensional computer images and
assemble them into three dimensional models by laying down
successive layers of powder that are heated, shaped and hardened.
Federal authorities are alleging that these high-end 3D printers
($10,000 – $20,000) from manufacturers such as Objet, 3D Systems and
Stratasys have been used by scammers to produce flawless skimmer
devices with exacting precision.

According to research from Check Point Software Technologies, social
engineering attacks are widespread, frequent and cost organizations
thousands of dollars annually. The most common attack vectors for
social engineering attacks were phishing emails, which accounted for
47 percent of incidents, followed by social networking sites at 39
percent. New employees are the most susceptible to social
engineering, according to the report, followed by contractors (44
percent), executive assistants (38 percent), human resources (33
percent), business leaders (32 percent) and IT personnel (23
percent).
Radware has introduced their Attack Mitigation System (AMS) which
they claim is the industry's first fully integrated IT security
strategy and portfolio that protects the application infrastructure
in real time against network and application downtime, application
vulnerability exploitation, malware spread, information theft, Web
service attacks and Web defacement. They say that AMS consolidates
multiple attack detection with mitigation technologies, such as
signature detection and network and application behavioral analysis,
to handle malicious application traffic through application-level
challenge/response techniques.

Some studies have shown that so called green loans made to foster
environmentally friendly projects can be profitable for banks and
help attract financially strong borrowers. Analysts note that these
green loans can be particularly important to smaller banks in
expanding their loan portfolio and attracting new customers. To be
successful, it is often critical to partner with local utilities,
vendors, and nonprofit organizations.

Fiserv announced that it will begin personalizing chip payment cards
based on the Europay MasterCard Visa (EMV) standard. The EMV card
features a micro-processing chip that stores cardholder data
securely, helping reduce the number of fraudulent transactions
resulting from counterfeit, lost and stolen cards.
Dynamics just unveiled its Chip And Choice technology which includes
two chips - a secure, embedded chip and an exposed chip. A user can
select different payment options by pressing different buttons on
the card. Dynamics' secure, embedded chip then writes a different,
temporary chip profile into the exposed chip based on the user's
selection. In doing so, a user can select and use different payment
applications even with readers that do not support such
applications.
