Hardware News
Check Point is introducing a new way of measuring
the performance of its devices called Security Power Units (SPU). An
SPU is a representation of the security functions a device can
support and the size of the network connection the device has. For
example, if you want to run a firewall, IPS, URL filtering and
application control on a device that is connected to an 800Mbps
network, that would need a device with an SPU rating of 1,170. Check
Point provides a calculator for customers to figure out their SPU
needs, as well as to help estimate future needs.

Software Updates
Symantec announced its next-generation email and content archiving
software, Enterprise Vault 10, which they say automatically classifies email
content and metadata and assigns the appropriate archiving and retention
policy to it. Through the new archiving feature, any posts to your
publicly-facing social media outlets - including blogs, Facebook pages and
Twitter feeds - can be preserved. Enterprise Vault 10 integrates Symantec's
Data Loss Prevention v11 technology, which analyzes Microsoft Exchange email
content and metadata in order to determine where and for how long messages
should be stored. Depending on the email body, messages can even be flagged
by the application to be reviewed for compliance reasons.
Hewlett-Packard announced the latest version on its Service Manager software
in an attempt to drive out a large portion of help desk cost, 85 percent of
which is estimated to be spent on personnel. Version 9.30 includes three new
key features: a mobile client, enhanced service catalog, and enhanced
knowledge management (KM). Other features include:
• Graphical “Process Designer,” which allows IT organizations to speed
implementations with a new GUI-based workflow designer and rules editor that
simplify the editing and configuring of workflows, conditions and rules.
•New survey capability, so IT can tune services to better serve their
coworkers with a new survey instrument from MarketTools that captures
end-user feedback.
• End-user self-services, which allows users to access self support help or
place a new support request.
• A new migration tool and an assessment tool for migration planning.

NXP Semiconductors, AuthenTec and DeviceFidelity announced that they
recently collaborated to complete the first biometrically-enabled
NFC mobile payment transaction in the U.S. The successful
transaction was made possible via a Motorola ATRIX 4G smartphone
equipped with AuthenTec’s AES1750 smart fingerprint sensor and
DeviceFidelity’s In2Pay microSD card based on NXP’s secure NFC
solution. The secure mobile payment was conducted when the
demonstrator swiped a finger over the smartphone’s fingerprint
sensor, authenticating him as the pre-enrolled account owner and
launching a credit card app. Following authentication the user
tapped the ATRIX smartphone against a payment terminal to complete
the first fingerprint-enabled, secure NFC transaction in the U.S.
Webroot is targeting mobile bankers with their Mobile Security for
Android system. Leveraging its anti-malware and cloud-based URL
scanning technologies, the company says that their software helps
block threats and malicious applications, and to assess the safety
of website links before a person clicks on them. Device Locate and
Wipe functions will also protect a person's personal information in
the event a mobile device is lost or stolen. The company plans to
introduce mobile security applications for additional platforms
later this year.
Verizon Wireless and American Express said that they're partnering
to let customers order goods through their phone by typing in their
phone number. Verizon will start integrating American Express'
Serve, a digital payment and commerce platform, into its phones and
tablets. All Verizon Wireless customers will be able to use Serve,
which can use other credit cards or financial institution accounts.

In Hewlett-Packard's second annual “Cost of Cyber Crime” study —
which was conducted by the Ponemon Institute — researchers found
that the cost incurred by cybercrime was up 56 percent year over
year. More than 90 percent of all cybercrime costs were caused by
four tactics:
1. malicious code
2. denial of service
3. stolen devices
4. web-based attacks
More points from the study:
• The average time to resolve a cyberattack is 18 days, with an
average cost of about $416,000. That’s a 70 percent increase from
the figure in last year’s study.
• Malicious insider attacks can take more than 45 days to contain.
• Organizations that deployed security information and event
management solutions saw a cost savings of about 25 percent, mostly
from slowing down the extent of the damage.
Imperva just released its first biannual "Web Application Attack
Report," which gathered information from more than 10 million Web
application attacks that occurred between December 2010 through May
2011. The directory traversal attack - an exploit where an attacker
gets access to restricted directories - accounted for 37 percent of
attacks during the six month period, followed by cross-site
scripting (XSS), with 36 percent of the attacks. Around 23 percent
of the attacks were SQL injection ones, and 4 percent were remote
file include attacks.

Google AdWords is a dynamic, auction-based marketplace where

1. Insurance (example keywords in this category include "buy car
insurance online" and "auto insurance price quotes")
2. Loans (example keywords include "consolidate graduate student
loans" and "cheapest homeowner loans")
3. Mortgage (example keywords include “refinanced second mortgages”
and “remortgage with bad credit”)
4. Attorney (example keywords include “personal injury attorney” and
“dui defense attorney”)
5. Credit (example keywords include “home equity line of credit” and

Online Banking/E-Commerce/Website Design
While mobile banking may be garnering more headlines than "old
fashioned" online banking, research conducted recently by Novarica
found that 38 percent of the U.S. population are avid users of
online banking versus about 15 percent who are mobile bankers.
Online banking is now the go-to destination for 70 percent of
Novarica’s survey respondents, and sixty percent of consumers prefer
to transfer funds online, again more than any other channel.
Novarica, recommends that banks consider several enhancements to
their online banking programs: integration with personal financial
management, targeted offerings, online account opening, and the
ability to easily set up email and mobile alerts online.
A Forrester study found that 75 percent of consumers would like
their primary financial institutions to offer PFM (personal
financial management) applications. Many analysts believe that banks
need to make PFM a core component of online banking, to also
include: building transactional features and functions around the
PFM dashboard to collect account and transaction information,
analyze data, create campaigns and cross-sell products and services.

RingCentral's cloud-based voice services are both
the phone system (which replaces the PBX) and the phone service. The
company claims that no other solution exists that allows a company
to run the entire phone system off a smartphone. They currently sell
their smartphone-based user interface for a PBX through the AT&T
service dubbed Office at Hand. RingCentral's service is priced at
$19.99 per user per month for an organization with 20 employees,
which includes unlimited local and long distance calls.
To help minimize pressure on their WAN (wide area network), Symitar
is using Silver Peak Systems appliances to help accelerate WAN
traffic. In action, the Silver Peak optimization appliances deliver
about 10 to 20 times the performance capabilities on the same amount
of bandwidth. The Silver Peak system allows Symitar to provide the
bandwidth needed to move large amounts of backup data offsite
relatively inexpensively, thus increasing the disaster recovery
capabilities for their bank clients dramatically..

Call Centers
VirtualLogger has introduced a post-call survey system that can
record calls and deliver a post-call survey in one integrated
package. The new system's approach streamlines the installation
process by eliminating the need for computer telephony integration (CTI)
or other telephone system integration, automatically maps the
survey, and the agent, to the call recording, and allows "cloud
based" recording.
