New line cards for the Catalyst 4500 switches support Universal Power Over Ethernet (UPoE), a means of supplying up to 60 watts per switch port which is enough to power a 23-inch monitor, thin-client computer and webcam-equipped IP phone. UPoE differs from previous versions of PoE in that it uses all four pairs of an Ethernet cable to supply power, doubling the wattage available to UPoE-capable devices. The new WS-X4748-UPoE+E line card has 48 Gigabit Ethernet ports, 24 of which can supply UPoE power. Cisco says that UPoE had no impact on system throughput or latency.

Lieberman Software announced the availability of a solution to discover Integrated Lights-Out (ILO) devices in Hewlett-Packard (HP) ProLiant servers and control access to the devices’ user accounts. HP iLO is an industry-leading remote access device that allows IT staff to access server administrative controls, reboot machines, monitor system components, and install and update BIOS from any location. Lieberman Software’s solution enables organizations to maintain frequently changed, unique credentials for each iLO device on the network, eliminating the risky practice of using a common, shared password among multiple remote access devices. Access to the credentials is granted through an audited web portal, and the time-limited passwords are only available to delegated individuals and automatically changed after each use.

According to a new report, Trends in Anti-Money Laundering 2011, from Celent, a Boston-based financial research and consulting firm, financial institutions globally will spend $5 billion on AML compliance, including operations and technology. Most respondents to Celent's survey (42%) cited regulatory requirements as the main driver for AML compliance. However, a substantial segment (25%) named reputational risk and protecting the brand as the primary purpose of their AML efforts. Celent notes that aside from the vendor's ability to deliver on implementation and after service, the three main areas institutions will want to evaluate are scalability, sophistication of analytics, and case management capabilities.

ATMs/Kiosks

Some observers believe that the updated FFIEC authentication guidance applies to ATMs and that ATM deployers should be doing more to battle ATM fraud. One suggestion is that upon detecting unusual and possibly fraudulent ATM activity, the ATM screen could present the user with an out-of-wallet challenge question. In action, the question would need to have a numeric answer (e.g., what year were you married) which means that current ATM key pads used to enter in PIN information would not have to be modified.

The National Australia Bank (NAB) has come out with an unusual marketing campaign: enter a contest to have one of their ATMs installed in your living room. Using Twitter, NAB is offering a link to a form on its website inviting Australians to apply for the unusual prize. The person picked will also get an opportunity for Internet fame, becoming part of their marketing campaign, having their "ATM exploits" filmed and transmitted online.

According to Gartner, worldwide mobile payment volume is forecast to total $86.1 billion, up 75.9 percent from 2010 volume of $48.9 billion. Despite these strong growth projections, Gartner analysts said the mobile payment market is growing slower than expected. Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) will remain the preferred mobile access technology in developed markets, where the mobile Internet is commonly available and activated on the phone. Mobile app downloads and mobile commerce are the main drivers of WAP payments, and WAP will account for almost 90 percent of all mobile transactions in North America.

Atlanta-based CorFire announced a branded suite of mobile e-commerce technology packages. CorFire’s branded products include CorTrust, its Trusted Service Manager (TSM); CorPay, a mobile wallet platform; and Cor360, a set of mobile marketing services that includes location-enabled offers, gifting, and loyalty services. The firm says that CorTrust enables banks to issue credit card and debit cards securely to the mobile device.

Isis, the mobile-payments joint venture of AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile, recently abandoned plans to build a proprietary merchant network. Now they have announced that they have enlisted the support of the four major general-purpose card networks in the U.S. In effect, card issuers that want to enable their cardholders to migrate their accounts to Isis’s mobile wallet can now do that more easily with all of the card brands as partners.
