Software Updates
Tarpipe is an online, Web-interfaced workflow system for social media
content publishing. You provide Tarpipe with the login details for the
various social media accounts you use and then you fill out a form with your
subject, content and an optional link, click on which services the content
should be sent to, and post your content. Then Tarpipe either fakes your
interaction with the services or uses the services' APIs. It also allows you
to email to a private mailbox for each workflow you design and send the
message contents to selected services. Plus you can create programmatic
"flows" to manipulate content to create social media updates.

ATMs/Kiosks
Brazilian ATM manufacturer Itautec, which has sold
more than 50,000 ATMs worldwide, has come out with what they are
calling the world’s first 3D image projecting ATM. Transactions on
the Adattis Touchless 3D ATMs are controlled through contactless
cards and gestures, plus it utilizes Face Tracking technology that
recognizes if the person at the ATM has changed or left, terminating
the session and safeguarding cardholder information.
Turkish bank Kuveyt Turk is modifying their ATM fleet to not only
dispense banknotes, but also 1 and 2.5 gram ingots of gold bullion.
The mini gold bars are not dispensed through the banknote output
chute, but via a special coin output module that is retrofitted to
the ATM. The gold bullion is packed inside a transparent plastic
coin roughly the same size as a two-euro coin.

According to Forrester Research, mobile commerce will soar from $3
billion in 2010 to $31 billion by 2016. However, mobile shopping is
expected to comprise only about 7 percent of e-commerce by then.
Meanwhile, a Retrevo Pulse survey shows a somewhat contradictory
vision: just 21 percent of 1,000 U.S. consumers said that they want
to purchase a smartphone outfitted with a NFC chip for mobile
payments. The firm notes that mobile wallets are more desirable
among younger consumers than those 50 or older. Twenty eight percent
of respondents age 18 to 35 were strongly interested in owning a
mobile wallet, versus three-quarters of those 50 and older who do
not want one. The study suggests that concerns about security and
privacy could be underpinning the hesitation over mobile wallets,
with almost 50 percent of respondents not interested in mobile
wallets saying they would not trust any of the firms being suggested
to manage them.
Naratte, a Silicon Valley-based start-up, announced that it can
provide the benefits of near field communication (NFC) with
ultrasonic technology by using the speaker and microphone already
found on mobile devices such as smartphones and flip phones. This
new technology, called Zoosh, is software that communicates in
frequencies that are inaudible to humans, but are used in nature by
various animals. The company claims that with one software update,
an App can now become Zoosh-powered to securely transfer data
between millions of devices already in use by consumers.

The Information Security & Business Continuity Academy launched its
free Return on Security Investment (ROSI) calculator. This
calculator is designed to help IT departments prove to the top
management that an investment in information security makes sense.
The calculation is performed in two steps:
Step 1. - The costs of an incident are calculated by taking into
account all the relevant costs if an incident occurs and the
probability of incident occurrence.
Step 2. - The costs of security measures/controls are calculated,
and the level to which the risk of this incident would decrease
because of such mitigation.
In an effort to reduce counterfeiting and improve durability, The
Bank of Canada plans to release a series of polymer banknotes, which
will replace cotton-and-paper bills. The polymer material is a
smooth durable film developed specifically for currency, and is
currently in use in 23 countries. The polymer material is expected
to last at least 2.5 times longer than current cotton-and-paper
bills, plus the polymer banknotes are better for ATMs because they
don't shed tiny bits of ink and dust that can disable ATMs by
confusing the machine's optical readers.
GreenSQL launched its Enterprise Edition for Unified Database
Security which offers security, caching, auditing and masking in one
package. GreenSQL's all-in-one approach offers a suite of security,
performance and compliance capabilities for SQL databases including:
database firewall, database activity monitoring, before-and-after
change logs, virtual patching, SQL Injection protection, separation
of duties, masking sensitive information and faster access speeds.

According to a recently released benchmark study, "Best Practices:
Online Chat," commissioned by TELUS International, agent skill is
the most important factor in optimizing the chat experience. The
next most important part of an online chat system is to have robust
technology that includes the ability to encrypt sensitive
information, provide estimated wait times, provide agent typing
notification, request post-chat transcripts and utilize advanced
features like co-browsing. The final key feature from the study is
to have a communications style that involves brevity and staying on
point, correct grammar and spelling and the appropriate voice and
tone.
