Tablets can be difficult to manage for many IT departments since the mobile devices feature many of the content creation capabilities of laptops but lack mature management and security software. Many hardware experts say that using a mobile device management platforms is the best way to implement remote wipe policies, password policy enforcement and minimum security guidelines for mobile devices on corporate networks. Some leading MDM platforms include AirWatch, MobileIron and Sybase, all of which support multiple operating systems.

Software Updates

Chexar Networks announced a new service that will give participants an advance warning of activity on a check prior to their making the decision to accept a check, including information about inquiries on the check prior to the first deposit. Endpoints include teller lines, ATMs and mobile banking applications. Clients will access the solution through a variety of interfaces including a Web-based portal and integrations with mobile application providers and banking platforms.

RedSeal offers an application that it says helps IT departments build a "security dashboard" that shows senior managers how their defense initiatives are holding up. RedSeal 5 offers intelligence and visibility into the current state of network security controls, the efficiency of security remediation efforts, and ongoing policy compliance. RedSeal 5’s metrics include key risk indicators for network security, vulnerability exposure, and policy compliance which are presented in a variety of customizable dashboards and ad-hoc reports.

ATMs/Kiosks

Mid-tier ATM manufacturer Nautilus Hyosung announced that the iF International Design Forum has awarded them its 2012 iF Communication Design Award for next generation ATM graphical user interface. Nautilus Hyosung won the award in the communication category for its online/offline applications development for their ATM graphical user interface. The graphical display features scaled transaction prompts, user "breadcrumbs" throughout a transaction, drag and drop elements and user controls enabling movement of the entire interface to user selected heights.

With its annual IBM 5 in 5, Big Blue makes predictions about technologies that will be commonplace in the next five years. This year they predict that biometrics will come to ATMs and other computing devices in a big way in the near future. In the next five years, your "biological makeup" will serve as your password, IBM said; for example, you will be able to walk up to an ATM and speak your name or look into the camera to gain access to your cash.

Wireless World


A Javelin Strategy and Research report finds that most consumers access mobile banking via a mobile browser, though downloadable apps are gaining and considered more secure. Forty-four percent of those surveyed said they use a Web browser for mobile banking. Mobile banking using a downloaded app is the second most widely used channel, at 25 percent. SMS banking, used by 19 percent of mobile bankers, is declining in popularity.

Bitdefender says that their Cloud Security for Endpoints protects systems remotely and employs the same enterprise-class security technologies as their on-site solutions. Cloud Security for Email provides antivirus, antispyware, antiphishing, trojan/rootkit detection, unsolicited email blockage and a two-way personal Firewall with intrusion detection. Their cloud-enabled security solutions are geared towards small and medium businesses, but they also offer a solution for larger deployments using their Gravity Architecture for Very Large Enterprises.

XTMv is WatchGuard's next-generation security UTM product that is a virtual appliance which provides network security and protection of applications and data. WatchGuard XTMv series can manage traffic passing within the virtual infrastructure and across internal networks between virtual machines in the same cluster or on the same server. The product will be initially supported on VMware vSphere.

Technology and Marketing

A 2010 survey by Javelin Strategy & Research found that the average cost per transaction varied hugely depending on how the customer made the transaction. Here are Javelin's cost estimates:

- in-person transaction at a physical branch costs $4.25
- a phone call to a call center costs $1.29
- use of an ATM costs $1.25
- online banking transactions costs 19 cents
- mobile banking transaction runs 10 cents

Online Banking/E-Commerce/Website Design


Not only is online banking convenient for customers, but it has been shown to increase customer loyalty for banks. Plus it increases efficiency and results in lower costs for the bank; e.g., research from consulting firm Javelin Strategy & Research found that consumers not using online banking cost banks $359 a year, which is $167 more than the annual cost of $192 for consumers using online banking services.

As part of its GoPayment mobile payment offering, Intuit announced the launch of the Intuit GoPayment Prepaid Visa Card. The card expands Intuit's strategy beyond processing credit cards on a mobile device to offering the convenience of a Visa prepaid account linked to GoPayment. Card holders can use the card to make payments online, in stores and withdraw cash at ATMs everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted. Those who prefer using a business or personal account can still choose to have their funds deposited into their bank account.

Internet Access

Riverbed Technology has launching Stingray, a new product line of devices that include one-ended WAN optimization, application delivery controllers, Web application firewalls and Web content optimization. The products in the new family are Stingray Traffic Manager, Stingray Web Application Firewall and Stingray Aptimizer. Traffic Manager is an application delivery controller that comes as either software running on a hardware platform or as a virtual appliance that is designed to perform global load balancing of traffic among servers, manage bandwidth, shape traffic and monitor service levels. Stingray Web Application Firewall can be deployed by itself or as an add on to Stingray Traffic Manager. Finally, Stingray Aptimizer software optimizes Web content for applications being delivered to devices that don't support two-way optimization. With an Aptimizer deployed on Web servers, content is formatted to reduce load times for pages and to use up less network bandwidth.

ADTRAN, a provider of networking and communication equipment, offers their ADTRAN NetVanta 644 which is a VoIP media gateway designed to interface between TDM and IP networks allowing connection of legacy telephone and PBX systems to IP networks. It is suitable as a PSTN gateway providing IP conversion for newer PBXs, like the NetVanta Unified Communications Enterprise Communication Server.
