DigitalPersona launched a new generation of

ID terminals.
Cisco filled out its desktop virtualization product line by adding a
thin client that improves processing and bandwidth utilization for
voice and video. The VXC 6215 thin client joins Cisco’s VXC 2000 and
2200 devices, while adding more sophisticated media processing to
the portfolio by reducing the processing and bandwidth required to
support voice and video on virtual desktops. It supports Citrix
XenDesktop and VMware View software, as well as Windows 7 and XP
operating systems, but Cisco left open the possibility that they
could be extended to Google Android and Apple iOS environments as
well. Cisco also unveiled the VXC 4000 software that allows users to
configure the laptop as a dedicated thin client or to run alongside
other applications.

vScope Explorer is a free tool that assesses the performance health of all
VMs in an environment, across data centers and from multiple vCenter
servers, displaying any existing or developing issues in an easy-to-read
heat map. This allows a VM administrator to assess the performance health of
all VMs in an environment on one screen. The analytics behind vScope
Explorer run predictive models based on trending growth and usage patterns,
forecasting when a resource is forecast to become scarce, or when
performance problems based on resource shortages may occur.

ATMs/Kiosks
NCR announced they will be working with PayPal and
S1 Corporation to enable real-time person to person payments from
their ATMs to almost anyone with a mobile phone or e-mail address.
This service will initially be available in the U.S. with the
ability to send money to people in more than 60 countries around the
world. The person-to-person payments offering will be available to
banks running on the S1 payment platform and using NCR APTRA Edge in
the U.S. NCR anticipates the service being available beginning in
the first quarter of 2012.
Level Four Software, a provider of ATM automation testing products,
and Wincor Nixdorf announced a new partnership to help existing and
potential mutual clients benefit from test automation earlier in the
software development lifecycle. The companies say that their
partnership will enable customers to bring ATM products and services
to market more rapidly.
Nautilus Hyosung America unveiled three new self-service features
with the biggest one being their Check and Cash in Module (CCiM)
technology that accepts mixed bundle deposits up to 50 bank notes
and 50 checks with the media interspersed and in any orientation.
Additionally, the CCiM allows for simultaneous mixed bundle
processing that filters rejected or retracted notes to separate bins
within the module itself. Nautilus Hyosung will offer both single-
and dual-throat deposit automation modules on advanced-function ATM
models. Nautilus Hyosung's two other new features are a 22-inch

Access Softek recently demonstrated a new location-based security
feature of their mobile banking platform that they claim no other
mobile banking products offer. Their software permits mobile bankers
to designate geo-location “safe zones” where they are allowed to log
in to the mobile banking app, but when outside the zone they cannot
login. The company points to studies that show that 98% of the time
people log in to their mobile app from just 2 or 3 specific
locations.
An analyst at Jefferies & Company is convinced that new technology
alone is not sufficient to encourage widespread U.S. takeup of
mobile payments at the point of sale. Jason Kupferberg believes that
mainstream adoption of mobile payments at the physical POS in the
U.S. is likely three to five years away. Although U.S. availability
of NFC-enabled phones and POS devices is increasing, accessibility
is just one obstacle that needs to be surmounted, and Kupferberg
says the industry lacks complete conviction that NFC will be the
sole mobile technology.

AppSecInc announced DbProtect Active Response for critical database
protection. Also called virtual patching or intrusion prevention,
the company claims that their technology goes beyond basic blocking
capabilities that fail to consider that environments and
applications differ. Active Response includes the capabilities to:
- Block suspicious activity
- Initiate malware (and other security) scans
- Disable inappropriate application users
- Notify SIEM systems of suspicious activity for correlation with
Web applications
- Open trouble tickets and assign to appropriate system
- Configure database to deny access to suspicious users or machines
- Send alerts to IT staff to initiate investigation and response
- Revoke administrative privileges.
Bitdefender announced the commercial availability of an integrated
security solution for VMware vShield 5 virtualized datacenters.
Security for Virtualized Environments integrates with VMware vShield
Endpoint to protect Windows servers and desktops, as well as Linux
and Solaris systems. To provide comprehensive protection, the firm
says that their antimalware scanning has been enhanced with a silent
agent designed to deliver memory and process scanning as well as a
local GUI for VDI end-users.
According to a recent study by Symantec, more than half of C-level
and IT professionals don't feel confident in their IT security
staffs’ ability to respond to new and emerging threats. Forty six
percent of those who lacked confidence indicated insufficient
security staff was a top factor, according to the study. A similar
number (45 percent) cited a lack of time to respond to new threats
for their existing staff. Respondents also cited other problems with
security, including keeping up with changes in the threat landscape,
maintaining adequate visibility of their own infrastructure, and
managing security log and alert data in a timely and effective
manner.

U.S. Bank has launched an iPhone application that offers merchants
the opportunity to provide customers with an instant line of credit
for on-the-spot purchases. Outdoor coop retailer REI is offering a
pilot of the program. The app downloads a virtual dual-branded
credit card to user mobiles that operates like a store card for both
in-store and online purchases.
A survey by Bankrate.com found that the availability of debit card

charge, and the most common payout remained 0.5 percent back, with a
