Complimentary Webinar

Maintaining Telecommunications & Meeting Auditor Requirements

It can be extremely difficult to maintain telecommunications with your staff and customers after a disaster. This point is evidenced by the fact that the Post-Katrina reports from all of the governmental agencies regulating financial institutions placed restoring communications quickly at the top of their lists. The FFIEC reports said that banks must:

"Anticipate disruptions in communications services, possibly for extended periods of time."

The report also noted that "communications outages made it difficult to locate missing personnel."

Therefore banks must develop affordable ways to quickly restore their telecommunications infrastructure. This complimentary Webinar will demonstrate how your bank can be prepared for telecom disasters without having a telecom person on staff or spending thousands of dollars on redundant phone systems.

What You Will Learn:

- How to inexpensively satisfy telecom disaster requirements
- How to show auditors that you can provide a backup telecom system with just 1 phone call
- How you can successfully answer every telecom disaster preparedness questionnaire on the auditor's forms.

BONUS: Every attendee will receive a sample Telecommunications Disaster Recovery Plan.

Who Should Attend:

IT staff, telecom staff, Audit and Compliance personnel, Managers, and anyone interested in maintaining telecommunications.

Date: Schedule a 30-minute live demonstration at your convenience that could one day save your business. If this isn't the easiest to use, most affordable, and most powerful inbound telecom disaster recovery system that you have ever seen, we will send you a free gift - seeing is believing!

Hardware News

Micron Technology said it is shipping what it calls the fastest enterprise-class solid state drive (SSD) on the market. The RealSSD P300 is aimed at servers, storage arrays and high-end workstations. The SSD is available in 50GB, 100GB and 200GB capacities, and can achieve a read throughput speed of up to 360MB/sec. and a write throughput speed of up to 275MB/sec. Unlike Micron's current C300 consumer-class SSD, which uses multi-level cell (MLC) NAND flash memory, the P300 SSD uses higher-end single-level cell (SLC) NAND, which increases throughput and longevity.

Toshiba has introduced a new hard drive feature that can wipe out data after the storage devices are powered down. The Wipe feature in Toshiba's SED (Self-Encrypting Drives) will allow for deletion of secure data prior to disposing or repurposing hard drives. Drives with the technology will go into hard drives for laptops and desktops. Beyond PCs, Toshiba wants to put this feature on storage devices in copiers and printers, which handle secure documents in digital imaging environments.

Software Updates

1E recently released the newest version of their NightWatchman Server Edition. Like their NightWatchman desktop solution, NightWatchman Server Edition can help reduce power consumption. The software doesn't, at any point, bring the server down - it is always up and always responsive. But the company claims that by using their Drowsy Server capabilities, they are able to reduce the power consumption of a typical server by about 12 to 15 percent. For both virtualized and physical servers, NightWatchman Server Edition produces an in-depth report that includes candidates for decommissioning, the steps for doing so, and the projected cost savings in terms of memory and hard disk costs, operational costs, and power costs.

SmartDefrag boasts an automated defragger that continually defrags the files that you use the most, and the maker claims that it accomplishes this without becoming a persistent drag on your system resources. It also includes a scheduler you can set up to defrag whenever you want and some customization features if you want the program to start when Windows loads or right before logging off. You also can set it to shutdown your computer when it's done defragging your hard drives and partitions.

ATMs/Kiosks

Trustwave has introduced an ATM Technical Security Review to evaluate and test a bank's ATM architecture and help remediate risk. The service will be delivered by Trustwave's SpiderLabs and covers four main components that can help lockdown the ATM:

• Bank ATM Architecture Review: Identifies gaps in the security posture of the ATM network that could be utilized by an attacker to deploy malware.
• Internal Penetration Test: Determines if current network security controls are vulnerable to attack.
• Machine-level Tests: Reviews and tests physical security, network security, application security and operating system/firmware security pertaining to the ATM in an attempt to extract debit and PIN data, as well as cash from each machine tested.
• Tactical and Strategic Recommendations: Clients receive a technical and executive staff briefing and detailed report containing test results and remediation recommendations.

A startup called Finsphere has launched a trial of a subscription-based alert service dubbed PinPoint that runs on top of online banking. The firm has partnered with Yodlee to monitor a cardholder’s transactions, and sends email and text alerts on potentially fraudulent transactions. Cardholders can configure various parameters, one of which is one of which is their physical location as determined by the location of their mobile phone. The service also provides contact info and help for reporting fraudulent transactions.

M-Com announced the launch of a Software as a Service (SaaS) version of its mobile banking and payment platform called BankAnywhere ASP Edition. M-Com provides text messaging and browser-based mobile banking for touch screen phones, flip phones and BlackBerrys. By the end of the year it plans to add an iPhone application to the hosted offering (it already supports the iPhone with its software). M-Com's strategic partner Fiserv contributed to the development of the new service and has incorporated BankAnywhere ASP Edition technology into their Mobile Money platform.

Check Point announced its new Multi-Domain Management software blades – Global Policy and Security Domain – that deliver virtual security management. The Multi-Domain Management software blades, based on Provider-1 technology, help administrators consolidate their security management while simultaneously preserving the independence of each domain. In action, organizations can centralize the configuration and management of their firewall, VPN, IPS and other security protections across domains while maintaining separation of duties across each security function with a granular role-based administration. In addition, through the Global Policy Software Blade, administrators can enforce a common security baseline and share a common network topology across multiple domains.

Technology and Marketing

According to a recent Mintel Comperemedia consumer survey, awareness of the new Reg E overdraft legislation is surprisingly high with 60% of online adults aware of the upcoming changes. Their research found that about 18% of consumers have had an overdraft in the past six months; that 26% of consumers have already opted in to the standard overdraft services; and that another 26% plan to do so. "Unfortunately, most consumers are unable to define exactly what Reg E will cover, making banks' efforts to promote it that much more difficult," comments Susan Wolfe, VP of financial services at Mintel Comperemedia. "In other words, consumers are aware that changes are coming to their overdraft programs, but are not exactly sure what it means for them."

Online Banking/E-Commerce/Website Design

MasterCard recently launched its next-generation Debit Display card on both its MasterCard and Maestro brands in Turkey with a fall pilot set for the United Kingdom. In general, the card looks like a regular debit card, but includes: a small rectangular LCD screen in the upper right corner and an integrated "press" button in the lower right. Press the button and the card generates a one-time pass code that helps prevent fraud in card-not-present (CNP) online and telephone transactions. As for Visa, their next-gen card features an LCD screen and 12-button keyboard on the back side - enter your PIN on the keypad and the screen displays a single-use pass code for CNP transactions. For their next move, MasterCard is piloting a next-gen keyboard card that can display current account balances when inserted into an ATM or point-of-sale terminal. What is next? Perhaps a three-dimensional, 360-degree video of you for identification purposes.

Internet Access

Dual-WAN routers are an affordable way to add more bandwidth and redundancy for smaller banks that cannot afford T-1 connections. Dual-WAN routers combine throughput from two sources, continue if one drops, then reconnect when the link comes back. Some dual-WAN routers to consider include: Check Point 1000N, D-Link DFL-210, Netgear FVS336G, SonicWall TZ200, TRENDnet BRV324 and Xincom DPG603. All units share a long list of standard features, including VPN support, DMZ support, some level of QoS, and firewalls of varying strength and granularity.

InterMedia Hosted PBX is an affordable hosted PBX service that includes standard IP PBX features such as an automated attendant, hunt groups, music on hold, find-me/follow-me, 911 and direct inward dialing. In combination with Intermedia's hosted Exchange e-mail service, the PBX service supports delivering e-mails converted to .wav audio files as well as click-to-call from e-mails. The monthly fee includes unlimited local and long-distance phone calls.

ShoreTel has released ShoreTel 11, the latest version of its unified communications software. ShoreTel 11's new features include: enhanced distributed architecture, new iPhone client and extended support for legacy PBX systems. The upgrade is available for free to current customers with a ShoreTel support contract.

Call Centers

Tracking First Call Resolution (FCR) is important for a call center of any size, but without the right technology, call centers will not be able to get an accurate tracking for FCR. One low tech method is to check your ANI (Automatic Number Identification) records to see how many repeat calls you had from the same ANI. It could be assumed that if the repeat calls were within the same 24 hour period, then the original call was not resolved at first contact. If the contact center does call recording, they could focus their efforts on callers who call back within 24, 48, and 72 hours. That way, they would know the reason for the call because they recorded the previous calls.
