Complimentary Webinar

Maintaining Telecommunications & Meeting Auditor Requirements

It can be extremely difficult to maintain telecommunications with your staff and customers after a disaster. This point is evidenced by the fact that the Post-Katrina reports from all of the governmental agencies regulating financial institutions placed restoring communications quickly at the top of their lists. The FFIEC reports said that banks must:

"Anticipate disruptions in communications services, possibly for extended periods of time."

The report also noted that "communications outages made it difficult to locate missing personnel."

Therefore banks must develop affordable ways to quickly restore their telecommunications infrastructure. This complimentary Webinar will demonstrate how your bank can be prepared for telecom disasters without having a telecom person on staff or spending thousands of dollars on redundant phone systems.

What You Will Learn:

- How to inexpensively satisfy telecom disaster requirements
- How to show auditors that you can provide a backup telecom system with just 1 phone call
- How you can successfully answer every telecom disaster preparedness questionnaire on the auditor's forms.

BONUS: Every attendee will receive a sample Telecommunications Disaster Recovery Plan.

Who Should Attend:

IT staff, telecom staff, Audit and Compliance personnel, Managers, and anyone interested in maintaining telecommunications.

Date: Schedule a 30-minute live demonstration at your convenience that could one day save your business. If this isn't the easiest to use, most affordable, and most powerful inbound telecom disaster recovery system that you have ever seen, we will send you a free gift - seeing is believing!

Hardware News

The company formerly known as Kace, now known as Dell Kace after its acquisition by Dell earlier this year, has released version 5.1 of its K1000 Management Appliance. The new version has enhanced power management and service desk capabilities. In addition, the company enhanced its Smart Label labeling technology, which lets users logically define groups, to add support for hierarchies and to apply labels dynamically based on search criteria and which can automatically place labels on new assets that the device discovers.

Software Updates

About 80% of Gartner clients skipped Windows Vista, and are relying mainly on the aging Windows XP, the research firm says. Windows 8 is "nowhere in sight," so "most organizations should be planning and testing Windows 7 this year," Gartner says. Microsoft has pledged to support XP until April 2014, seemingly giving organizations a long lead time to migrate to a newer operating system. However, by 2012 the new versions of many applications will not support XP, and various independent software vendors will start eliminating XP support, Gartner says. Planning, testing and piloting a new operating system takes 12 to 18 months for most companies, so they should start testing Windows 7 this year.

Endpoint management vendor Promisec, which also happens to include agent-less power client hardware management features in its software, has been added to the list of products that are eligible for certain energy efficiency rebates from Pacific Gas & Electric. Promisec manages power on desktops without introducing agent software onto the systems, but it also can be used to manage other settings, most notably security. Of course you must be in California to take advantage of this particular Promisec rebate, but utilities in other states have similar offers.

ATMs/Kiosks

In an effort to help ATM deployers mitigate card skimming on their ATMs, Diebold has rolled out a suite of anti-skimming solutions. Diebold’s card-skimming technology includes ATM card-reader security designed to deter skimmer attachment, an alert system that warns bank personnel thieves have attached a skimming device to an ATM and an electromagnetic field that interferes with a skimmer’s ability to capture a card’s magnetic-stripe data.

Last year, Wincor Nixdorf rolled out browser-based solutions for mobile banking with the introduction of PC/E Mobile Banking. At the time, the offer focused on taking existing content from a bank's Internet banking site and transforming it for use via a mobile phone browser. Now the company announced that they have expanded their PC/E Mobile Banking solution to support mobile phone applications. The use of apps is now possible in combination with Wincor Nixdorf's modular software portfolio PC/E Suite, which focuses on the sales and service processes.

A report from the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston estimates that it will be at least five years before cell phones outfitted with near field communication (NFC) chips will become widely used as payment tools in the United States. Among the obstacles preventing the widespread U.S. adoption of NFC payments is the lack of a business model that would work to the advantage of card brands, issuers, mobile operators, and handset makers. Meanwhile, the NFC chips would add another $10 to $15 to a cell phone's price tag, according to the Boston Fed. An even more pressing issue is the dearth of contactless readers at U.S. retailers, and many merchants will choose not to upgrade their point-of-sale systems until it becomes absolutely vital. Nevertheless, the Boston Fed sees long-term benefits in NFC technology, including the possibility of a "fully enabled digital wallet."

MasterCard announced the roll out of a person-to-person money transfer service for iPhone and iPad users dubbed MoneySend. The service permits users in the U.S. to send or request money via their iPhone through participating financial institutions, or when they create a virtual prepaid account that is linked to an existing MasterCard payment card or checking account. The designated account funds the MoneySend transaction, and users can manage and trigger the exchanges through the app. Personal and financial information is never stored on the iPhone or iPad.

Malware, especially rootkits, often blocks security programs from updating and working properly. They may also block access to security sites where you can download more-specialized security programs. That is why some IT workers use programs like SUPERAntiSpyware Portable Scanner. This utility, one of the better anti-malware scanners, is free for personal use. (Professional IT users need to pay a license fee.) The anti-malware tool can be downloaded and run directly on an infected PC or added to a USB drive as part of a portable AV toolkit.

Technology and Marketing

Branch growth continued in 2009 despite the popularity of online and mobile banking, the recession and recent declines in branch transaction volume, but some analysts are predicting a decline in branch count this year. They believe that now is the time to carefully plan your bank's branch strategy and that you should take into account these key elements: current network size, mix and geographic footprints as well as branch design, staffing and functionality. Some observers contend that many banks will need fewer branches with smaller footprints (in-store, strip mall, etc) in the future. They suggest carefully taking into account the following planning considerations: 1) market level factors; 2) competitive aspects; and 3) customer base dynamics.

Online Banking/E-Commerce/Website Design

ING DIRECT USA launched a new online overdraft calculator to raise consumer awareness about the high cost of overdraft fees. By selecting the amount of money overdrawn and the number of days that money was overdrafted, consumers can calculate how much ING DIRECT's line of credit would charge, compared to the average $30 overdraft fee.

Visa Europe has commercially launched its CodeSure system, which is comprised of a card with a display for generating one-time codes to authenticate online transactions. The Visa card features an alpha-numeric display, a three-year battery life and a 12-button keypad built into the back of a conventional credit, debit or prepaid card. To validate a transaction when shopping on the Web or logging in to an online banking service, the cardholder activates the authentication process by pressing the "Verified by Visa" option button on the card's keypad. When prompted, they then enter their PIN into the keypad embedded in the card which prompts a unique one-time-passcode to appears on the display, which is then used to authenticate the transaction.

Understanding that small-to-medium-sized businesses have growing IT needs but lack enterprise-sized budgets, Hewlett-Packard is tailoring the Microsoft Unified Communications platform to the SMB market. HP's offering is built around three Microsoft Unified Communications suites -- Exchange Server, SharePoint Server and Communications Server. Naturally, HP would prefer that organizations run this software on HP servers, storage and networking hardware, and has just rolled out some new hardware: HP StorageWorks X310 Data Vault, starting at $549, a StorageWorks Network Storage System starting at $3,512 and a P2000 G3 Modular Smart Array system starting at $8,970.

Avaya recently launched four products designed to support video and UC applications. Included in the newly extended portfolio are:

* Avaya Ethernet Routing Switch 8800, targeted for larger data centers and designed to optimally boost capacity in support of UC, virtualization and unified wireless solutions.

* Avaya Wireless LAN 8100 Series, planned for release in mid 2010 to support 802.11n wireless transmission and extend UC applications for mobile users.

* Avaya Unified Communications Management (UCM), Configuration and Orchestration Manager (COM), designed to more effectively manage multi-user configuration, provisioning and troubleshooting.

* Avaya Advanced Gateway 2330 - a SIP gateway planned for summer 2010 deployment to supply cost-effective, survivable voice services to branch locations.

Call Centers

Web chat is becoming increasingly more popular as a way to increase "stickiness" on a website, promote cross-selling and upselling, as well as "saving" online applications that might, otherwise, be lost. But contact center supervisors must focus on making sure agents have the support and training they need on a new chat initiative or on new features to a chat program. Will they have a knowledge base available for "canned" answers? And how will they integrate knowledge base information in their chat transactions to make the customer feel as if they are getting personalized service? Supervisors will also need to make sure that staffing matches volume, and ensure that agents know what part of the performance process they are held accountable for (adherence and compliance).
