Complimentary Webinar

Maintaining Telecommunications & Meeting Auditor Requirements

It can be extremely difficult to maintain telecommunications with your staff and customers after a disaster. This point is evidenced by the fact that the Post-Katrina reports from all of the governmental agencies regulating financial institutions placed restoring communications quickly at the top of their lists. The FFIEC reports said that banks must:

"Anticipate disruptions in communications services, possibly for extended periods of time."

The report also noted that "communications outages made it difficult to locate missing personnel."

Therefore banks must develop affordable ways to quickly restore their telecommunications infrastructure. This complimentary Webinar will demonstrate how your bank can be prepared for telecom disasters without having a telecom person on staff or spending thousands of dollars on redundant phone systems.

What You Will Learn:

- How to inexpensively satisfy telecom disaster requirements
- How to show auditors that you can provide a backup telecom system with just 1 phone call
- How you can successfully answer every telecom disaster preparedness questionnaire on the auditor's forms.

BONUS: Every attendee will receive a sample Telecommunications Disaster Recovery Plan.

Who Should Attend:

IT staff, telecom staff, Audit and Compliance personnel, Managers, and anyone interested in maintaining telecommunications.

Date: Schedule a 30-minute live demonstration at your convenience that could one day save your business. If this isn't the easiest to use, most affordable, and most powerful inbound telecom disaster recovery system that you have ever seen, we will send you a free gift - seeing is believing!

Hardware News

IBM is planning to release a new class of x86 servers that treat memory, processors and solid-state disks as interchangeable components. IBM's new eX5 server line, based on Intel's upcoming Nehalem-EX chips, is an early example of so-called "fabric-based" computing, which allows IT Departments to scale up memory and other resources without necessarily having to buy a new server. IBM's eX5 servers will come in blade and rackmount configurations, and Big Blue claims the new servers will improve database performance by a factor of 30 over current systems, while greatly improving performance-per-watt and virtual server density.

Dell announced its faster, more energy efficient OptiPlex 980 desktop and FX100 zero client, intended for IT Departments looking for energy efficient alternatives. Dell claims that its new OptiPlex 980 is its highest performing business desktop to date, with up to 35% greater performance than previous generation OptiPlex systems. They also say the OptiPlex 980 has a more energy-efficient design, and includes new management features such as virtual remote control capability with Intel KVM (keyboard, video and mouse) and simplified task management with Dell’s Update Catalog for Microsoft Systems Center. Meanwhile, the new FX100 Zero Client - which is a client that can be managed without the need of a processor or operating system - is intended for both the virtual remote desktop and dedicated remote workstation environments. The FX100 uses PC-over-IP technology (PCoIP) and supports VMware View 4.0 with PCoIP.

Software Updates

According to research firm Forrester, Windows XP is still running on 80% of all Windows-based enterprise PCs. This has earned XP the title of "the operating systems that won't die." Yet many factors are working against XP, such as 1) aging XP infrastructures need refreshing; 2) Windows XP's support is nearing an end; 3) and client virtualization has evolved and can speed up migrations. To motivate Windows 7 migrations, Microsoft announced the availability of MDOP 2010, the latest iteration of its deployment tool suite for software assurance customers. MDOP 2010's application (App-V 4.6) and desktop (MED-V 1.0) virtualization features have been updated to ease migrations to Windows 7 and Office 2010.

Axcient announced it is offering a new service that allows automated backup onsite, as well as business continuity or disaster recovery schemes to be set up for IT administrators. Axcient claims that ServerAlive allows an administrator to restore a failed server, including the operating system and all applications, in about 15 minutes by launching a virtual instance of the failed server through a Web browser. The server image then runs on the appliance until an administrator can repair the server or install a new one, at which time the server image can be migrated from the appliance. The service starts at about $50 per month for backups and a 250GB appliance. The ServerAlive appliances come in various capacities, from 250GB to more than 4TB. Those capacities are then mirrored in the Axcient's offsite cloud.

ATMs/Kiosks

Federal regulations do not currently require banks to notify their customers at an ATM that they are about to overdraw their account, but it could be coming in the future. Either way, Triton Systems says that its machines can already notify customers if a withdrawal by ATM is about to overdraw their account. In fact, Triton has already deployed that functionality for some of their clients.

By some estimates, the worldwide economic downturn has caused the use of cash around the globe to increase by 20% to 25%. This is forcing some ATM deployers to find new ways to optimize their management of cash. Cash optimization is designed to balance customer demand for cash with the cost of supplying that cash - finding a way to minimize the total cost of handling cash while still delivering the right amount of cash to the right place at the right time. The bottom line is that many banks should plan on spending more on technology in the future to optimize their management of cash usage in ATM machines.

VeriSign is looking to make mobile banking both more secure and convenient with their Identity Protection Service, a cloud-based authentication service that embeds an authentication credential in the mobile application. They replace a three-step process of username, password and PIN with a secure four-digit PIN - the PIN and the known device identification add up to two-factor authentication.

By some accounts, attempted check fraud declined in 2008 for the first time in years, but overall check-fraud losses continues to climb while debit card fraud is hitting smaller institutions more than ever. The criminals are “taking the path of least resistance” since they believe that smaller institutions do not have sophisticated fraud detection systems in place. As skimming attacks increase, even PIN debit cards are not as secure as they once were.

Matasano Security, a security consulting and research firm, has developed Flint, an open source tool that evaluates rules found on Cisco firewalls for outdated, redundant, or exposure to other security threats. Flint is based on Ruby on Rails, is available as a VMware virtual appliance, and source code is available. Other vendors in this market include AlgoSec, Tufin, SecurePassage, and Skybox Security.

Technology and Marketing

Social networking permits banks and their customers to “talk” to one another and creates the potential for banks to participate in the deeper community relationships social networking users have with one another. A new report from Mercator Advisory Group entitled “Customer Centric Delivery Channel Service, Social Networking Strategies: Innovation and Engagement Point to Clear Winners” states that banks must integrate social networking into their marketing and product delivery channels in ways that create brand loyalty/brand differentiation, product cross-sells and greater immediacy and intimacy in customer contact. Mercator believes that consumers will accept the migration of banking’s virtual transactions, like opening, funding and using bank accounts, to social media platforms. They point out that older working Americans are the fastest growing group on social networking sites, which adds to the imperative to participate in social networking platforms.

Online Banking/E-Commerce/Website Design

Network Intercept offers a ‘hardened' version of Mozilla Firefox that they say can secure access to online banking sites. The browser accesses the Internet after setting up an encrypted channel between itself and Network's Intercept's cloud. All sites are visited through this layer, which also renders sessions anonymous. Network Intercept says that their solution accelerates browsing and blocks domain redirection attacks, and stops malware having access to personal data within a session. In the background, a semi-independent keystroke interference program (which works with other programs on a PC) blocks both hardware and software keylogging. The program also incorporates Clam-AV antivirus scanning, integrates file encryption for files on local or attached drives, and allows encrypted file transfer.

NetDeposit announced it will support a mobile remote deposit capture product from Mitek Systems. Mitek already has already forged similar partnerships with Fiserv, NCR and others. Fiserv plans on offering remote capture to clients on a licensed software basis, as an application service provider (ASP), or on a hybrid model.

Internet Access

SIP trunking capabilities offer organizations the ability to scale their telecom systems faster and more cost-effectively than they can with traditional phone lines. According to a recently published report from REDCOM, with proper network assessment planning and implementation, SIP trunks can deliver high quality and reliable service with cost savings. SIP is a signaling protocol that assists in originating, managing, and terminating VoIP telephone calls.

Expand Networks announced its WAN Optimization solutions have been validated by Inmarsat, a leading provider of global mobile satellite communications services. Combining Space Communications Protocol Standard technology (SCPS) with compression, byte-level caching and layer 7 QoS, Expand helps mitigate the bandwidth and latency limitations that can traditionally affect the speed and performance of applications over satellite links. This enables service providers to pass on increased levels of quality of service and control, higher bandwidth throughput, and reduced latency to users.
