Hardware NewsIBM is planning to release a new class of x86
servers that treat memory, processors and solid-state disks as
interchangeable components. IBM's new eX5 server line, based on
Intel's upcoming Nehalem-EX chips, is an early example of so-called
"fabric-based" computing, which allows IT Departments to scale up
memory and other resources without necessarily having to buy a new
server. IBM's eX5 servers will come in blade and rackmount
configurations, and Big Blue claims the new servers will improve
database performance by a factor of 30 over current systems, while
greatly improving performance-per-watt and virtual server density. Software Updates According to research firm Forrester, Windows XP is still running on 80% of all Windows-based enterprise PCs. This has earned XP the title of "the operating systems that won't die." Yet many factors are working against XP, such as 1) aging XP infrastructures need refreshing; 2) Windows XP's support is nearing an end; 3) and client virtualization has evolved and can speed up migrations. To motivate Windows 7 migrations, Microsoft announced the availability of MDOP 2010, the latest iteration of its deployment tool suite for software assurance customers. MDOP 2010's application (App-V 4.6) and desktop (MED-V 1.0) virtualization features have been updated to ease migrations to Windows 7 and Office 2010. Axcient announced it is offering a new service that allows automated backup onsite, as well as business continuity or disaster recovery schemes to be set up for IT administrators. Axcient claims that ServerAlive allows an administrator to restore a failed server, including the operating system and all applications, in about 15 minutes by launching a virtual instance of the failed server through a Web browser. The server image then runs on the appliance until an administrator can repair the server or install a new one, at which time the server image can be migrated from the appliance. The service starts at about $50 per month for backups and a 250GB appliance. The ServerAlive appliances come in various capacities, from 250GB to more than 4TB. Those capacities are then mirrored in the Axcient's offsite cloud.
ATMs/KiosksFederal regulations do not currently require banks
to notify their customers at an ATM that they are about to overdraw
their account, but it could be coming in the future. Either way,
Triton Systems says that its machines can already notify customers
if a withdrawal by ATM is about to overdraw their account. In fact,
Triton has already deployed that functionality for some of their
clients. Wireless World VeriSign is looking to make mobile banking both more secure and convenient with their Identity Protection Service, a cloud-based authentication service that embeds an authentication credential in the mobile application. They replace a three-step process of username, password and PIN with a secure four-digit PIN - the PIN and the known device identification add up to two-factor authentication. Security Section

Technology and Marketing Social networking permits banks and their customers to “talk” to
one another and creates the potential for banks to participate in
the deeper community relationships social networking users have with
one another. A new report from Mercator Advisory Group entitled
“Customer Centric Delivery Channel Service, Social Networking
Strategies: Innovation and Engagement Point to Clear Winners” states
that banks must integrate social networking into their marketing and
product delivery channels in ways that create brand loyalty/brand
differentiation, product cross-sells and greater immediacy and
intimacy in customer contact. Mercator believes that consumers will
accept the migration of banking’s virtual transactions, like
opening, funding and using bank accounts, to social media platforms.
They point out that older working Americans are the fastest growing
group on social networking sites, which adds to the imperative to
participate in social networking platforms.
