SonicWALL, a provider of network security, email security, secure remote access, and backup and recovery solutions, plans to work with Hewlett-Packard to support their ProCurve Networking initiative. Through this alliance, SonicWALL will extend its Unified Threat Management (UTM) technology into the ProCurve network environment, taking part in ProCurve's ProActive Defense strategy to secure networks against internal and external threats. ProCurve's offerings provide network management solutions for network access control and threat detection and response, and SonicWALL's hardware complements that of ProCurve by providing UTM features for WAN perimeter defense and deep packet inspection for internal threat defense.

Software Updates

The PsTools suite provides some handy free utilities from Microsoft. The whole suite acts as a remote toolkit, meaning that unlike most Microsoft mini admin utilities, these are meant to work on remote systems rather than only local jobs. At present, there are 12 PsTools in the suite. PsPasswd, for example, is designed to change user account passwords, but it has the capability to do it over one or multiple remote workstations on the domain. PsShutdown is another powerful tool that delivers the ability to shut down, reboot, or hibernate any target PC.

GlobalScape, the maker of the popular CuteFTP client, offers a software-only WAFS (wide-area file services) solution and a bevy of FTP servers, including EFT (Enhanced File Transfer). EFT 5.0 allows you to create rules that automate the handling of incoming files, e.g., you can create a rule to issue a warning when a new file arrives or to automatically move specific files to a new location. The rules engine runs on Windows servers, as does EFT itself, and includes an easy-to-use GUI. Its security features include the ability to manage keys and encrypt data using OpenPGP. You don't need to have EFT at both ends of a connection because file transfers can also be initiated from a command prompt or from a browser.

Issuing unique passwords for individual applications at the bank creates inefficiencies and headaches for both endusers and IT workers. Single sign-on holds promise, but many organizations have shied away from it due to complexities and costs. Fortunately SSO software is becoming much easier to implement and more affordable. We will cover one package in the upcoming issue of BANK tech-trends - subscribe now.

Wireless World

There have been numerous announcements recently in the mobile banking arena. First Data and mobile banking software vendor mFoundry are partnering to offer mobile banking and payment services to its STAR Systems EFT network of more than 5,400 financial institutions. The Sybase 365 announced its mobile banking services are available to banks in the Americas. Sybase 365 supports mobile alerts, marketing campaigns, two-factor authentication and two-way banking services. Finally, Amdocs and Bankinter have launched a joint solution dubbed the Amdocs Mobile Banking Solution that enables banks to offer mobile banking services.

ViVOtech, a vendor of contactless/NFC payment software, recently received investments from First Data and NCR. The Silicon Valley-based firm is touting these investments as a major vote of confidence in contactless payment and mobile transactions via near-field communication (NFC) technology. NCR said that it plans to use ViVOtech’s products “to allow consumers to make contactless payments with radio-frequency-enabled credit or debit cards and NFC-related mobile phones.” There are currently about 20 million contactless cards in circulation that are accepted at approximately 32,000 merchants in the U.S.

Encryption is a hot topic right now, and it will likely be required for more and more of your bank's data. With that comes an increasing need to manage numerous encryption keys securely. As a rule, key management has been integrated as a part of each encryption platform, and in the absence of industry wide guidelines, each vendor has developed its own methodology for operation of its key systems. Here are some options:

- Decru Lifetime Key Management
- Ncipher Keyauthority
- Neoscale Cryptostor Keyvault
- RSA Key Manager

US consumers have lost more than $7 billion to malware and e-mail phishing scams over the past two years, according to new research released by Consumer Reports. The median cost of a phishing incident is $200. Furthermore, scammers' tactics are improving says CR, with phishing e-mails now looking more convincing with better grammar, more believable stories and authentic-looking Web addresses.

Javelin Strategy & Research has come out with some security elements of a 'dream credit card' for protection against identity fraud. For fraud prevention, the dream card issuer would:

1. Provide cardholders the ability to restrict or allow certain types of transactions (e.g. cash advances, foreign transactions, card-not-present transactions).
2. Use identifiers other than social security numbers for identity verification.
3. Truncate all cardholder-sensitive data while interacting with cardholders.
4. Encourage cardholders to protect their home computers with anti-virus software by partnering with security software vendors.
5. Offer a photo of account holder on card.

Online Banking/E-Commerce/Website Design

Javelin Strategy & Research says that banks should move fast to open their own blog sites if they are not to miss out on a powerful new brand building and customer interaction capability. Currently, less one percent of financial institutions have opened blogs. Javelin analyst Jean Garascia says that "successful blog sites require preparation and research of both consumers and peers, and can pay big dividends through higher customer interaction levels."

At the recent DefCon security conference in Las Vegas, one security analyst said that many of the new practices that banks are using to verify customers' identities are actually making their customers easier targets. He claims that in their rush to meet the FFIEC requirements, many institutions have overlooked some serious vulnerabilities in their schemes. Find out what he is talking about in the upcoming issue of BANK tech-trends - subscribe now.

Verizon Business, a division of Verizon Communications Inc., said its notification service, launched in mid-February and targeted at government and academic users, will soon be expanded to business customers. The notification services, which are hosted with Verizon, are available during an emergency through voice and data over multiple devices. An administrator can activate a notification from a smart phone or other device in a remote location. The service is priced in three parts, including set-up, annual licenses for the user organization and an annual charge for the number of recipients in the system.

SherWeb, a leading hosting provider of Microsoft Exchange Server and BlackBerry, announced its hosted offering for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 software. SherWeb offers 3 GB of personal disk space for $8.95 per user, per month. Call Centers

Some call center experts say that small organizations that are in particular need of call center solutions that are effective and cost sensible, should look to the virtual contact center as a solution. For example, with the Eagle Express from EagleACD, callers are greeted by a proprietary voice and once a directive prompt is selected, are sent into a call queue where the next available agent, best suited for the query, will be put on the line with the caller. The offering helps to provide smaller businesses with cost savings since received calls are placed on the Eagle Server and transferred to the ACD only after an option has been selected. These type of 'pay-as-you go' solutions should help make it possible to remain cost efficient, while still providing good service to callers.
